Description
This unusual and intriguing study of nationhood explores the 19th-century confrontation of ideas that transformed the kingdom of Siam into the modern conception of a nation. Siam Mapped challenges much that has been written on Thai history because it demonstrates convincingly that the physical and political definition of Thailand on which other works are based is anachronistic.

I'm fascinated with the history of Southeast Asia and I travel there quite frequently on extended trips. I fell in love with Thailand from my very first trip there and find the country and people very welcoming and gracious. Learning more about Thailand is a hobby with me and I've somewhat familiar with it's history. I purchased this book to learn more about the history and the thinking of how Siam, now Thailand, has been created over the course of it's history. I found this book an excellent reference for this purpose and would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the country. Great book for my library on Southeast Asia.
