One of the best researched novels I've read. LOTS of detail on forensics, firearms, geography, and more. The main character and storyline are fully engaging, but these authors provide plenty of extra treats with multiple tangential threads to peak the readers' interest as well as provide a wealth of depth to the plot. While working on solving a 30-year old murder, the hero becomes entangled with much of the local culture which includes trips to a cockfight, an illegal marijuana field, and a perfectly legal but seriously secreted away ginseng farm. He nearly gets buried in a cave, finds his way through a kudzu tunnel, and finds himself on the receiving end of a shotgun. The writers masterfully pull it all together, by leading the reader through a spider web of decades old family feuds and doling out some poetic justice along the way. I will be reading other books by these two!
